Guess
who called us about our 2009 Jedi Camp?
Lucas Films!
That's
right! Lucas Films, creator of the Star Wars franchise, called Alpha
Martial Arts on 6/17/09 about our super popular Jedi Camps! Much to
my dismay, they weren't calling to compliment us on our awesome camp
or ask me to choreograph all of the lightsaber battles in the next film.
They have asked us to stop using the name "Jedi Camp"
because the word "Jedi" is trademarked.
They
were super nice about it. They just asked that we stop using the name
"Jedi", which I of course agreed to do! I apologized and assured
them that I meant no harm. Their representative said that it was clear
we were running the camp for kids, and not trying to damage their image,
but they still can't let us use any of the trademarked words from Star
Wars (and their are tons!). They want to maintain control over
the Star Wars brand, which is 100% understandable. I want to
maintain control over the Alpha Martial Arts "brand" as well!
Unfortunately,
licensing is not an option for our camp usage. Lucas
Films does grant limited, one time usage rights, but because our camp
is an annual event we are not eligible to license the name.
I
had always thought that our Jedi Camps helped promote the Star Wars
brand in a positive way, and they have, but due to trademark rights
it is time to make a change. This year's Jedi camps
are sold out (and they are going to be better than ever!) but we need
to come up with something new for next year.
So,
I have 2 questions I'd like you to answer:
1)
What should we call "the camp formerly known
as Jedi?" Please email
your suggestions. We'll review them all and award a free week
in one of our 2010 Karate Camps to whoever's name gets chosen.
In the event that our final name is submitted by more than 1 person,
we will hold a drawing to determine the winner.
2)
What other theme camps would you be interested in attending?
We have run awesome theme camps in Seattle, WA for the last several
years related to Star Wars, Harry Potter, Karate Kid, Ninja Turtles
and more. What theme would you like to
see next year? Kung Fu Panda, Transformers, Gi Joe,
Naruto, Dora...???
Get
your creative juices flowing and email
your suggestions. We'll review them all and award a free week
in one of our 2010 Karate Camps to whoever's theme gets chosen.
In the event that our final theme is submitted by more than 1 person,
we will hold a drawing to determine the winner.
Thanks
for your suggestions! We are looking forward to making our 2010 camps
better than ever!!!
